Eating Out

There are many restaurants and tavernas within a few km of Tesseris Filoi.  Below are a few of our favourite spots but are by no means the only places on offer. We recommend you jump in your car/moped and go and explore the island as there’s lots more to discover!
See map for locations.

Restaurants

Please note: High season on Syros is July – August and it is advisable to book in advance when eating out during these summer months. Beach restaurants tend to start opening up through May, and closing down from mid/end September; most are closed October through April, but if you head into Ermoupoli there are many restaurants and bars that stay open all year round.

De La Gracia, Poseidonia

A delightful Greek Taverna serving delicious traditional dishes, good wine and great cocktails, overlooking Agathopes beach. Through the restaurant you can also rent sunbeds on the beach for a low daily charge, including table/bar service. The restaurant serves an extended lunch menu during peak season (in addition to their regular menu) which includes great pizza, fries, burgers etc. and can be a godsend if catering for fussy little ones! Limited parking is available – it gets very busy during the day but it is a bit easier to find a space in the evening.

ONO, Poseidonia

ONO is a bigger, lively European-style beach bar/restaurant right on Agathopes beach overlooking the sea. Very good modern Mediterranean food (and sushi!) at a higher price than the smaller local restaurants. ONO actually consists of two bars, a restaurant, a private area and three different 'zones' with sunbeds available to rent. A fun place to stay all day and people-watch. The music gets turned up in the early evening so the bar area has a party vibe between 6-8.  If you go for dinner and want it a little less noisy try and book from 8.30pm onwards. ONO has it's own car park with spaces for a number of cars (up the hill away from the busy beachfront).

Achladi, Achladi Beach

A wonderful beachside taverna, one of our favourites. A peaceful spot slightly off the beaten track, Achladi serves Greek fare and good wine. If you have kids its perfect as they can entertain themselves on the beach right beside the restaurant. It is down a steep slope off the main road, you can park either on the road and walk down (recommended if there are spaces), or there is a car park at the bottom of the slope.

Top tip: in peak season the main outdoor dining area gets flooded by the tide so you may be sitting with your feet in an inch or two of water- very cooling, but make sure to wear appropriate footwear! Ducks and geese may also appear to eye up your lunch!

Allou Yiallou, Kini

Popular Greek restaurant right on the seafront by Kini Beach. Lively atmosphere where booking is essential in summer. Fresh local dishes and seafood. Particularly beautiful in the evening while the sun sets.

Iliovasilema, Galissas

This is one of the more 'fine dining' restaurants that we’ve found on Syros, run by well known chef Bougiouris. It has a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, very close to Galissas beach. Fantastic food made using local ingredients. Strongly recommend booking well in advance, especially during peak season.

Benois Restaurant, Hotel Benois, Galissas

This hotel has a lovely relaxed restaurant close to Galissas beach, with really friendly staff, and a long menu. Great for lunch or an early dinner if you’re on Galissas beach for the day. Also a brilliant spot for a cocktail after soaking up beautiful sunset views from the beach.

Baobab, Finikas Marina

Lovely modern café / restaurant overlooking the boats moored in the marina- great spot for a quiet breakfast watching the boats bobbing in the water. Fantastic coffee and croissants. The café turns into a lively restaurant in the evening, sometimes with a live band, serving an array of good cocktails. Booking isn’t usually required during the day but recommended for dinner.

Limanaki, Finikas Marina

Another, more traditional, Greek restaurant located in the marina. Delicious Greek dishes and wine, in very tranquil surroundings. The terrace and restaurant are bigger than most on the island, but we’d still recommend booking in peak season.

Plakostroto, San Michalis

A remote, family run retaurant with stunning hilltop views over the sea. Set in the northern-most town on Syros - about 30mins drive from the villa which takes you through Anos Syros and the northern settlements / mountains. This is an adventurous moutain drive with beautiful views, but with steep edges this is not to be attempted after a few drinks!

San Michalis is famous for its local cheese which you'll find in all the stores on the island.

In Ermoupolis...

There are many fabulous places to eat and soak up Ermoupolis' history and views. Here is a small selection of our favourites, booking is highly recommended in the busy July / August period.

Ciel or Sta Vaporia, both are set along the rocky east coast of Ermoupolis lined by very old merchant mansions with beautiful sea views. Ciel with a more contemporary vibe (pack your swimmers to take a dip off their pier), Sta Vaporia with a more rustic feel. This location is excellent for lunch or a relaxed drink to enjoy the view.

Avant Garden or Seariani, both represent high quality dining in the old center of Ermoupolis, close to the marbled historic main square. Perfect for a relaxed evening meal with friends and family.

Hygge Syros, set in historic Anos Syros with views from high up the hillside looking over Ermoupolis below and towards the port. Very good food, this is upscale dining in a relaxed atmosphere -  a favourite spot among locals.

To Mikraki, 4 Thermopilon. As the name suggests, To Mikraki (The Little One’) is a tiny Greek restaurant cafe tucked away behind the Diogenis Hotel at Ermoupolis port, where you will eat on the cobbled street under a cloud of Bougainvillea.

On Mykonos….

If you have time to kill between ferry and flight on Mykonos, here are a couple of great places for lunch only a few mins drive from the Port, also en-route to the airport so no detours needed! Use Google Maps for exact locations.

(FYI, traffic is terrible between Port and airport in the summer so leave plenty of time for driving).

Compass, a lovely Greek restaurant with great views, right by the sea. Small area to park on opposite side of road. Opens at 11am for lunch, the staff are very friendly and relaxed, it’s family-friendly and they don’t mind if you stay for a while!

Zuma, modern Japanese restaurant with delicious food for lunch or dinner, one of the top restaurants in Mykonos. Really fun atmosphere with great views. Open in the summer only, best to book online. Lunch starts from 11am, parking available.
