Recommended Routes
There are various ways to get to Syros, and these change seasonally as fewer or more flights and ferries are scheduled both from Athens and Mykonos. Here we outline our own recommendations.
Summer Season
(May to September)
Via Mykonos:
Fly in and out of Mykonos
Rent a car to collect and drop off at Mykonos Airport
Get a quick ferry from Mykonos to Syros (Ermoupoli is the name of the port), and vice versa for the return
Points to note
CAR RENTAL
You can't usually rent a car on one island and take it to another island however Argus Hire (arguscarhire.com) will usually do it for no fee. You just have let them know (and explain to the support people that you are not crossing any international borders).
In the summer months, car rental on Mykonos is hundreds of euros cheaper than Syros. The ferry costs ~60euro (return) to add the car. Getting a taxi to/from the airport is considerably more than that because the taxis are run by something of a 'cartel' and only about 20 taxis exist on the whole island! So overall this should be much cheaper and much more convenient.
In the past we have booked a Budget Hire car, through Argus. Please check directly with them but Argus say it would be fine to do this ferry crossing with any car hire company booked through them, but specifically mentioned Budget's policy, so that's why we usually go with them- you just need to let them know at the hire desk when you collect
If you do want to rent a car on Syros we recommend using Maistrali Car Rental (rental@maistraligroup.gr). They have offices next to the Port, or will meet you with the car anywhere you ask them to (e.g. the airport).
Roads on Syros are small, and parking - especially in historic Ermoupoli, is designed for smaller cars, so we wouldn't recommend a hummer!
FERRY
The ferry in Greece is almost ALWAYS late- by at least 30 minutes, so don't panic when it doesn't arrive on time. It's how the Greek roll. HOWEVER- please do factor this in to your return trip timings (i.e. Syros to Mykonos). We recommend AT LEAST 3 hours between your ferry arrival time and your flight time (if you're getting taxi's make it more!)
You can check the (approximate) ferry times on Ferry Scanner (https://www.ferryscanner.com/en/ferry). There are usually faster and slower ferry options - typically ~25mins / ~45mins / ~75mins.

If you book the ferry online in advance, don't forget you MUST check-in before boarding. Online check-in is typically open from 24hrs before ferry departure.
Beware the lack of clear signage and well-placed officials at Mykonos port!! The car lanes you need to queue in to get onto the ferry are unmarked and typically sandwiched between the waterfront and the long building housing the convenience store and pedestrian waiting area; in contrast, the pick up / taxi service lanes are marked and set back a little from the waterfront, before you get to the building with the shop and pedestrian waiting area. Many people we know have ended up in the pick-up lanes by mistake (because they're the first queues you'll probably see), which makes for a panicked rush to get out of there and in the correct place before the ferry leaves! If in doubt, we strongly recommend you ask someone nearby if you are in the correct place BEFORE the ferry arrives.
Winter Season
(October to April)
Via Athens
Outward trip: Fly into Athens
Stay near the airport for 1 night (there are limited flights to Syros and due to the timings of the London-Athens leg you are not likely to make the trip in one day). Fly Athens to Syros the next morning - this is a short 35min flight (Sky Express; https://www.skyexpress.gr/).
You can also get a ferry from Athens to Syros- it takes over 4 hours, and can be a bit rough, but it is a lot cheaper! (https://www.ferryscanner.com/en/ferry)
Return trip: Fly Syros to Athens
Flights typically depart Syros around 11am. You'll have a short stop over until your connecting flight to the UK / elsewhere.
Again, you could get a ferry from Syros to Athens if you have your sea legs on!
